English National Curriculum

The bedrock our school is the English National Curriculum.  Its balance of academic rigour, enquiry-based learning and relevance to the modern world is unequalled.

The curriculum is based on many years of research into the ways in chlidren learn best.  All of our pupils are set individual targets and their progress is closely tracked in order that they can be extended and supported, depending on their needs.  Externally developed tests (SATs), used in UK schools and benchmarked by the UK government, ensure that our standards compare with those of the very best schools.

The National Curriculum is organised around attainment targets in each subject.  An attainment target sets out the knowledge, skills and understanding that pupils of different abilities and maturities are expected to have by the end of each key stage.  Attainment targets consist of eight level descriptions of increasing difficulty.  Each level description describes the types and range of performance that pupils working at that level should characteristically demonstrate.

The range of levels within which the great majority of pupils are expected to work at the end of each key stage are:

  • Key stage 1 – levels 1–3    (at age 7 – level 2)
  • Key stage 2 – levels 2–5    (at age 11 – level 4)
  • Key stage 3 – levels 3–7    (at age 14 – levels 5/6)
  • Key Stage 4 – levels 4-8    (at age 16 – levels 6/7)

The British International School, Shanghai, while basing its curriculum on the UK model, also reflects the locality of the school in Shanghai, China. We provide an appreciation of the different cultures and religions from which our children come.
